Sliding Glass Door Replacement Options
Let’s face it, nothing lasts forever. Sliding doors are popular and well used points of entry to and from entertainment spaces. The original sliding glass door installed by your home builder is a budget model. After just a few years of use, the rollers and tracks started to wear out and the door no longer operates smoothly.
How about energy efficiency? Often, builders have installed single pane glass doors built using inefficient, non-insulated, extruded aluminum. After years of exposure to rain, wind, and the extreme temperatures of our Southern climate, your original door no longer seals properly and is a big contributor to energy loss. After all, it is the largest window in your home.
You can do a lot better and we will show you how.
Sliding Glass Patio Door Replacement
At Houston Window Experts, we have installed many sliding glass patio doors. With experience comes expertise. To obtain a great fit and finish resulting in flawless operation for years to come, you need to choose a high-quality product.
We have evaluated several large manufacturers of sliding doors and have settled on the best available. When you visit our Houston showroom, you’ll see and operate some of the finest doors on the market. From fiberglass to vinyl to aluminum clad wood to aluminum frames, you’ll learn about the benefits of each material.
Sliding Glass Door Treatment Options
Many of the manufacturers we carry have several color options for the frames. Choose the door maker with the color that goes with your decorator colors. Choose from white, tan, bronze, and wood grained as well as combinations (one color inside and a different color outside if you like).
Some of the other options are, of course, double-pane vs. triple-pane glass. Low-e and gas filled. Optional locking hardware finishes and lock locations. Available mini blinds built-in.
Since the patio door slider is a point of entry and exit from your home, building code usually requires tempered glass. Tempered glass makes it safer to exit in case of glass breakage since tempered glass will shatter in many small pieces.
One of the great sliding glass doors we have available is the Pella Impervia fiberglass door. Check out our video on this fantastic door option.
Infinity from Marvin Patio Doors
Another great fiberglass sliding patio door brand is the Infinity by Marvin. The Infinity series utilizes a pultrated fiberglass with a trade name of Ultrex. Again, fiberglass is 8-10 times stronger than vinyl and much more resistant to the effects of extreme temperature changes. Choosing fiberglass over vinyl and other frame materials is a premium choice and will cost a bit more but, is well worth the price.
Q: Why choose Fiberglass over Vinyl?
A: Fiberglass material is equivalent to vinyl insulating properties. Fiberglass is more impact resistant and since the fiberglass formula is closer to glass material, it will expand and contract more like the glass panes. Fiberglass is also up to 10 times stronger than vinyl.
Q: Are sliding glass doors energy-efficient?
A: Double and Triple pane sliding glass doors are great insulators. Professional measuring and installation are also key to getting a great seal for no-draft sliding door.
Q: How can I improve the energy efficiency of my sliding glass door?
A: Sliding patio doors are the largest window in your home. Correct installation as well as periodic inspection and minor caulking maintenance will ensure many years of energy efficient operation.
Q: What type of glass is best for energy-efficient sliding glass doors?
A: Most of our patio door manufacturers use top of the line Cardinal 366 double strength glass. The “366” in the name means 3 coats of Low-e with 66% visible light allowed through while blocking ultra-violet light. Being an exit point, your local building code may also require the glass be tempered.
Q: Can I replace a sliding glass door myself?
A: Sliding glass doors are very wide and very heavy. Houston Window Experts uses enclosed trailers with proper retention methods to transport to your home. Our installation teams consists of several experienced tradesmen used to transporting and installing large glass doors and windows. Getting the door plumb and level is key to a long lasting installation.
Q: Are sliding glass doors safe?
A: Yes, when installed correctly, patio doors should be fairly effortless to operate. With double strength tempered glass, accidental breakage is minimized.
Q: What type of locks are best for sliding glass doors?
A: Most doors include a sliding switch with double hooks to hold the door securely closed and weather tight. Check our some of the high end patio doors at our showroom and we will demonstrate the various vent locks and additional jam locks available.
