Just because a window company has been in business for 100 years does not always mean it’s the brand for you. Homeowners need to consider the operating types of windows (casement, slider, hung, etc.) available from the manufacturer as well.
Whether you want to replace your windows with the same opening style or want to change out some of the styles to make you home work better for you, make sure the company you work with is knowledgable about local building codes. Windows in bedrooms need to consider egress access. Windows near exit points may need tempered glass. If the installation company does not know regulations, choose somebody else.
Energy Efficiency Of The Best Window Brands
To say that a window is “Energy Star” rated means that it meets the minimum specifications for your climate zone. In our Southern Texas climate, windows should be chosen with lower (better) solar heat gain ratings (SHGC) than homes in the Northern climates where they experience colder and longer winters.
Security and STC Ratings
Lower end windows are not robust as far as security goes. The locking mechanisms are cheap and easy to break or jimmy. Quality windows have reinforced lock rails and stronger (sometimes multiple) locks. When you upgrade your windows, make sure you are also upgrading your security!
STC stands for Sound Transmission Class. Modern dual pane windows are quieter than older single pane but, you can also make your home even quieter by requesting asymmetric glass (one pane thicker than the other) or choosing laminated glass. Laminated glass has a strong vinyl sheet between two sheets of glass. This type of glass contributes to a lower STC rating and will boost security.
