Own A Brick Home In Houston?

Many of our competitors make simple mistakes when replacing windows on a brick home. Let’s review the Three Most Common Mistakes made when replacing windows on brick homes:

  1. Measurements! Accurate measurements are critical. If an old window is removed and then it is discovered the replacement window is too big, there really is only one correct solution. Cover the opening with plywood and order a new window. Unlike a wood framed house with siding, it’s difficult, if not impossible to cut away the brick to make it fit. We take measurements in 3 or more places to get the narrowest dimensions.
  2. Careful Removal and Prep! Inexperienced or rushed workers can damage the brick when removing the old windows. The glass needs to be removed but, also the window frame needs to be removed. Poor removal technique when replacing windows on brick homes can damage the brick making additional repairs necessary.
  3. Not Accounting For Expansion and Contraction! As you know, materials expand and contract with changes in seasons and temperatures. In Houston, we often see temperature changes of 40 degrees or more in one day! If you don’t take that into account when measuring, expansion could make the window difficult to operate and contraction creates leaks.

Besides Better Energy Efficiency, What Changes Can You Make Replacing Windows on Brick Homes?

Okay, so you already realize that modifying a brick home’s window openings is difficult and costly. What can you change for a better view and improved curb appeal?

Window Type – You have the opportunity to change the type of window. You may want to remove single-hung windows and replace with double-hung. Maybe you want to have some casement windows installed. Perhaps a picture window would be better in that location (as long as it is not an egress point).

Grid Styles – Whether you have standard grids or no grids at all currently, you can change to prairie grids or perimeter grids. Maybe switch from internal grids to external grids. There are also different profiles like ogee and bullnose styles.

Color – Houston Window Experts will show you a number of different manufacturers’ windows and color choices. If your home had silver aluminum window frames, compare our color samples and choose from bronze, white, tan, black, and several other colors. Some of our manufacturer’s offer two different colors of framing (one color outside, another color inside). It’s easy to get the curb appeal you’re after with planning and some smart choices.

Glass – Not all glass is alike! Most of our offerings have glass by Cardinal Glass. Cardinal is a top of the line double-strength glass – far superior to your original single-pane or double-pane windows. Double and triple-pane windows are built into an insulating glass unit (IGU). The panes are insulated from each other by a spacer and either just air filled or filled with argon or krypton gas for even better insulating. The glass itself is coated with solar energy filtering oxides to reduce heat gain and ultra-violet light. Other options for glass include tempered (required by building code next to exits), laminated and a combination of both such as used for hurricane windows and to reduce sound in noisy neighborhoods.
